 Date:         June 18, 2003

 Time:        3:00 p.m.

Place:       St. Luke’s United Methodist Church,
                         86th & Meridian, Indianapolis, IN

Speaker:    Mary L. Hill, RN, BSN, J.D.

Topic:        Principals of Healthcare Ethics, Patient
                Autonomy and Surrogate Decision Makers
                        in Indiana

Mary developed this program because of working with some very challenging cases with the Case Managers.  The presentation is very practical and she has developed a "cheat sheet" that is useful in clinical decision-making.

Mary will discuss the basic principals of Health Care Ethics, the distinction between competence and decision-making capacity and how these issues are decided.  She will identify valid surrogate decision-makers, the hierarchy of surrogate decision-makers and practical methods of negotiating conflicts among decision-makers.  She will apply these principals to actual case studies.
