IU Medical Group
Topic: Asthma
Treatments, Medications, and Devises
Jamie will provide a synopsis of asthma. She will describe the differences in inhaled
medication and the importance of spacers and the need to receive inhalers
correctly. Barriers and limitations of
treatment within the healthcare system will also be discussed.
Jamie Lee received her Bachelors of Science Degree, is Certified/ Registered
Respiratory Therapists and National Certified in Asthma. Jamie works in 10 Out- Patient Clinics at Wishard Hospital in education and case management
of asthma and COPD patients.
Jamie started working in the ER/ICU at Wishard Hospital in-patient setting and realized
that patients kept coming back due to recidivism of their illness. They did not know how to take their inhalers
correctly, nor correct inhalers for the best control, nor correct dosages or
medicines to control the problem. She formed
an asthma task force and ultimately created protocols to obtain outcomes that
are more desirable. Through her efforts,
education was implemented for the in-patient site, and then 2 years later expanded
to the out-patient care setting. Patients are referred to Jamie by physicians to 10 Out-Patient Clinics
at Wishard Hospital for assistance to better control their reparatory illness. Since the program has started, there has been
a decrease in hospitalizations by 67% and ER visits for the Medicaid population
by 62%.
