    Speaker:   Sally Irvin, PhD
                   ICAN Founder/Executive Director,
                   Indiana Canine Assistant Network (ICAN)

Topic:      Dogs - Are They Good Medicine?

Sally will present a general overview of the assistance and implications of incorporating dog movement in health care settings.  She will discuss the research that addresses the health benefits of animals in this setting and the role of service dogs for different populations and settings.

Sally grew up in Albany NY.  Throughout her childhood, dogs were a central focus…and this focus lead to her founding and directing Indiana Canine Assistant Network (ICAN).  ICAN is a nonprofit with a dual mission.  ICAN trains and places assistance dogs with children and adults who have physical disabilities while providing incarcerated adults job and life skills as they care for and teach the dogs.

Before starting ICAN in 2002, Sally worked in medical education at Community Hospital in Indianapolis from 1990 to 2001.  In her role at Community, she taught family practice residents communication and counseling skills.

In her spare time, Sally enjoys spending time with family and friends (both two and four legged), and being outdoors.
