    Topic:       Hispanic Health Resources

Dr. King will provide an overview of the barriers that are encountered by the Latino population when they seek various services including medical services.  She will provide knowledge and avenue of access to the resources that are available to navigate the barriers.  In addition, she will provide a snapshot view of the past, current, and future trends of the needs for the Latino population in Marion County and the State of Indiana.

  

Biographical Summary

Gloria Berlanga King, EdD

 Dr. Gloria Berlanga King is of Mexican descent and was born in East Chicago IN.  She received her B.S. and M.S. degrees in Education from Indiana University.  She also received her doctorate in Adult Education from Southeastern University. Her education background and management experience have been key factors contributing to her success in higher education arenas, private corporations, and non-profit organizations.  Through her work at a local non-profit organization, Dr. King was able to provide access to services for over 4,000 Latino families in Greater Indianapolis.

 Dr. King has served as the Director of Multicultural Affairs, a department that includes Hispanic Health Resources at Wishard Health Services in Indianapolis IN.  In this capacity she directs thirty-three full and part-time staff:  a Program Development Manager, a Spanish Language Resources Coordinator, twenty-eight Spanish Medical Interpreters, a Program Coordinator, and two Bilingual Advocates who assist Latino families through the hospital process. The Multicultural Affairs Department also provides training opportunities for Indiana University and Butler University students seeking internships in the medical field.  These internships provide opportunities to work directly with Hispanic patients that come to Wishard as their safety-net hospital. 

 Dr. King’s leadership skills and knowledge of Latino affairs benefit several organizations throughout the State of Indiana.  She also serves on the Board of Directors of the Latino Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, Board of Directors of Horizon House, member of the oversight committee for Ventanillas de Salud (Windows of Health) in conjunction with the Mexican Consulate’s Office.
